Easy Audio Copy is the sibling of the award winning Exact Audio Copy, which is the industry standard. Easy Audio Copy concentrates on the extraction functions and surpasses Exact Audio Copy in speed and quality. While Exact Audio Copy provides more functionality for professional users, the drawback is that it is much more complex to use. To get good results, users must first be familiar with the many options that are available and which are the best for their unique situation. For example, Exact Audio Copy has 34 graphical user interface elements in the main window, and more than 160 overall settings. Most people don't want that much complexity. They want a program which is simple to use, without needing special adjustments for their hardware and without needing to download any additional components. To meet this need, Easy Audio Copy was developed. It enables even inexperienced users to achieve excellent results. No background knowledge is required. The initial configuration is limited to selecting the installation language and one or more compression formats. Then you just insert a CD - Easy Audio Copy will automatically fetch CD information from the internet and will start extraction directly afterwards. Here is a feature overview of of Easy Audio Copy:

Easy Usage

Easy Audio Copy was specifically developed to achieve excellent resultswithout requiring the user to have background knowledge. All choices were sensibly minimized to reduce confusion. Highly developed algorithms make the necessary decisions to achieve the same high quality results that one would get with Exact Audio Copy.Additional information is explained in detail, so that the user can make informed choices.

Best CD Information

The application automatically downloads CD information from variousinternet sites (for example, from the GD³ database). This includesartist, title and composer data as well as cover images. Easy Audio Copythen combines the results from the various sources to obtain the bestpossible information about the CD content.During extraction, this information is stored within the audio files, so that music player applications will be able to display detailed information for each track. The files are also sensibly named using the artist and song title, which will help you to find specific files quickly.Exact audio copy tag

Of course, you can edit this information based on your own personal preferences.

Compression formats

Easy Audio Copy supports the most important file formats: MP3, Flac andWAV.For each format, all CD information is stored within the file, so that the title and artist information can be separately accessed. International character sets are also supported (however the WAV format only supports the local windows character set).It is possible to extract a CD to several compression formats in one pass, such as creating an archive of your CDs in the Flac format while also creating MP3s for your mobile playback device.

Excellent Error Correction

Most computer users don't realize that read errors on audio CDs are notreported, and that these errors therefore end up in the extracted audiofiles. Programs like Windows Media Player and iTunes do not performerror correction, and thus the user can’t know whether the extracted CDtracks are really error free.Easy Audio Copy uses the extraction routines of Exact Audio Copy, whichare the industry standard. For Easy Audio Copy, the routines wereoptimized for speed and quality. If a CD couldn’t be extracted errorfree, the application shows which tracks contain errors and whereexactly these are located on the CD. Furthermore, tips are given on howto improve the extraction results on such CDs.

Entirely in English (Multilingual)

All of the program is displayed in the English language. It is possibleto switch the language within the application to German. Additionallanguages will follow shortly.

Publisher's Description

Exact Audio Copy allows you to get audio tracks off a CD and save them to your hard drive. It uses the Windows ASPI Interface, so both SCSI and ATAPI CD-ROM drives are supported. It supports hidden sector synchronization and has a secure, fast and burst extraction method selectable. Fast extraction should get the same speed as other grabbers, but is probably not exact anymore. Burst mode just grabs the audio data without any synchronization. It allows you to output of time positions of all non-exact corrections and listen to these positions. You can also copy of ranges of music data, not only tracks. Automatic Speed reduction on errors and fallback afterwards ensures that your music will still sound decent. It uses the Windows Audio Compression Manager for direct compression to MP3 or WAV. It also supports external MP3, VQF, RA and AAC encoders for automatic compression after extraction. Filename editing is easy with local and remote CDDB database and CDPLAYER.INI support and more features like ID3 tagging.

Still the best CD ripping tool out there. One minor note: The latest version (1.3) isn't parsing ampersands and apostrophes correctl from the freedb. They're showing up as ' for apostrophes and & for ampersands.

Enlightenment reviewed v1.0 Beta 4 on Dec 19, 2014

I've been using it since 1998.
Not the most user friendly to setup, but worth it since it does the best ripping results.

Excellent!!! Five Stars!!!

good to see an update to this software. extraction speed seems to have improved in this version (at least for my cd drive).

Exact Audio Copy Portable

Been using for years now, going from strength to strength. Version 1.0 doesn't contain any malware...

Great ripping quality as always, but the EAC 1.0 beta switched to a new database format which it fails to import all the titles from my old database -- a serious bug.

The installer contains malware.
No, I don't give a ratz azz about what the twits in the EAC forum say; the eBay adCrap is malware.
No, I don't care that it's optional.
It's MALWARE and should not be in an installer.
Get it the H - E - Double - Hockey - Sticks out of the installer or Betanews should remove it and BLACKLIST it.
I'm tired of this garbage masquerading as so9mething harmless and the stupid apologists defending or excusing it.
IT'S MALWARE.
ONE star.

Using this program seems to be a useful program but after ripping cd's to your hard drive in accurate rip is fine but what is needed is this program needs a cd burning capabilty so that it will burn these same files to cd. If this program had this it would rate highly but sadly it doesn't.

Fafner76 reviewed v0.99 Pre-Beta 5 on May 10, 2009

Used it a lot in the past, never used it in my new PC till today. Don't know what's wrong, but extraction speed is unbelievably slow for me although I'm using the very same settings I always used, doesn't even go past 2x where Easy CD-DA Extractor goes around 25x.

zollner reviewed v0.99 Pre-Beta 5 on May 10, 2009

Simply the best quality at any price.
A tiny bug: the extraction option 'Create .m3u playlist on extraction' appears to be broken.

UPDATE 10-29-08: I had occassion to use this application in depth on a set of audio book cd's that were pretty scuffed up.
Bonk Encoder 1.0.9 does not have the type of error correction that EAC does, and though it was able to rip the CD, I noticed that there were actually small errors at the times where I saw the program pausing during the rip.
Used EAC and though it took about 4 times longer, the result was 100% error free when listening to the rip.
I'm glad this app is free, and I'm glad this app is out there.
It's one of those special use applications that you are really grateful to have available, even if the need for it is infrequent.
ORIGINAL REVIEW:
Basically, this particular app offers Better Error Correction Functions than the average ripper. It simply tries harder to ensure a top-quality rip. It doesn't take anything for granted or make assumptions, it just get's all up in the face of your hardware and says 'Hey, you WILL do that extra work, so suck it up and get it done - the right way!'
Is it overhyped? Meh. Maybe.
Is the development too slow? Errr... Yeah.
Is it worth moving up from the ever-awesome AudioGrabber program? Mmmm... Ya Betcha!
Is it still worth using when you have an awesome solution like Bonk Encoder out there?
Well, that's a bit of a different situation there. But I do think using both will get you the best of two worlds.
Makes dbPoweramp look like a chew-toy, don't it? :)
Especially since it's totally FREE.
With EAC and Bonk available for no cost, why would anybody even want to consider paying coin for anything else? Throw in Audacity and MP3 Gain and you got yourself an unbeatable package of audio awesomeness, without spending a single hard-earned penny.
Save your money, blow on by those inferior apps (dbPoweramp is soooo '1980's Hair Band Fluffish...) and snag yourself a copy of EAC. It really is Just That Good.
To quote one of the greatest minds of our generation:
'Thank you, drive through.'

This is the best ripper for windows if you care about quality.
Others 'do not understand' why EAC is better.
That is because they do not understand digital audio extraction of a standard (or non-standard) CD-DA disc.
Why EAC excels:
- configurable re-read options
- use or skip the internal drive C2 data for ECD
- Proper settings for lead-in / lead-out reading
- Calibration for reading/writing offset for any drive
- Configurable to be used with any encoder, using any command-line options
- All the basic features there: freedb query/submit, mp3 idv1/idv2 tags
- Stable, reliable and supports multiple interface (ASAPI, ASPI and Win Native)
There is _nothing_ that comes even close.
Many have tried and some have come far from their humble origins, but this software is still the best, if you know what you are doing and need the features (non-standard discs, copy protected discs, bad pressing, classical/mixed cds, scratched discs, etc).
If you do not need/understand this, fine, but bad that does not EAC make.
If you just need something simple and don't care about quality - look elsewhere.

Why is EAC so great? Just talk to any high volume trader, especially Grateful Dead fans. In order not to degrade the digital gene pool, it is necessary to have your CD/DVD drive accurately calibrated by the software (you'll have to read the docs with the program to dive deep into this). Doing this ensures that what you decode to your hard drive and then write to another CDR is exactly the same going out as going in.
EAC makes this easy to do. And that's why it is the traders extractor of choice.
Accept no substitute (tho' DbPowerAmp is pretty neat on this as well)

@echohead
'...but if someone can TRULY explain how/why EAC is so great, without starting a fanboy riot...'
The question is simple: GRATITUDE! I use EAC since first version 0.1beta (June 25, 1998). This software was ever freeware (wich was hard to find in 1998). The developer still work on it and do an excellent job. EAC still is one of the best CD ripper. It's stable and don't mess with our system! That' why I think Exact Audio Copy is Five Stars!
